Beaverton Cupping • Pain Relief for Back, Neck, and Shoulders
At D’Vida Injury Clinic & Wellness Center, cupping sessions are focused on the back and shoulders. The patient will lie face down on a massage table, and a small amount of massage oil is placed on the skin. Cups are then placed on the back and shoulders, and the patient relaxes for a short time with the cups in place. Sometimes the acupuncturist will move the cups across areas of the back and shoulders while the suction is active.
What is Cupping?
Cupping provides suction to the acupuncture points, meridians, or energy pathways, and muscles. A partial vacuum with cups are placed on the skin either by means of heat or suction. This increases circulation of blood and Qi, or energy, promotes oxygenation and releases tension / contraction in the muscles, tissues and meridians. Traditionally, glass or ceramic cups were heated and placed against the skin, and as the air cools it would pull the skin up into the cups. More recently, vacuum can be created with a mechanical suction pump that pulls the air from a valve on top of the cup.
Are Cupping Treatments Painful?
Treatments are not painful, most patients say it feels very relaxing, but it can leave red marks from the suction placed from the cups. The feeling has been described as “reverse massage” where the muscles and skin are pulled up instead of compressed. Cupping has become popular among many of our patients, and some have found extreme relief and reduction in swelling and inflammation in other parts of the body as a result.
