Whiplash and Concussions | Causes and Treatment

Whiplash and Concussions two are extremely common injuries that may result from an auto accident. Although whiplash and concussions are two separate conditions, they often occur simultaneously. Both require diagnosis and treatment to heal fully. Without treatment, whiplash and concussions can cause prolonged and sometimes permanent pain and damage to the body.

What is Whiplash?

Whiplash injuries occur from the forward and backward movement of the head and neck during a car accident. The force of the accident causes the joints, nerves, discs, muscles and ligaments in the neck to stretch beyond their normal rang – resulting in tears, pain and inflammation.

Without treatment, these injuries may never fully heal. D’Vida specializes in treating victims of auto accidents and fully and successfully heals hundreds of whiplash patients every year.

How Do I Know if I Have Whiplash?

X-Rays, MRIs, and a physical examination by a doctor can determine if you have experienced whiplash. Although pain and headaches may be associated with whiplash, symptoms of injury after an auto accident do not always appear right away. In fact, they may not appear for weeks or months after an auto accident.

What is a Concussion?

A concussion is a minor traumatic brain injury (TBI) which is caused by a blow to the head. In the case of a car accident this blow may be caused by the car seat, window, windshield, airbag, etc. Concussions affect the functions of the brain and may result in the inability to think or speak clearly, trouble reading and writing, inability to concentrate, difficulty remembering new information, dizziness, nausea, or a general “foggy” feeling.

How Do I Know if I Have a Concussion?

CT scans and MRIs are used to determine if swelling or injury occurred in the brain as a result of injury. A thorough medical history and physical exam in addition to these tests will help your doctor verify that a concussion has occurred. If you have experienced any of the symptoms listed in “What is a Concussion” (above) following a head injury, contact your doctor today.
